Hot Brakes on the Haleakala Highway Grade Below Pukalani
The long downhill on Haleakala Highway between Pukalani and Kahului is hard on brakes, especially in a loaded car or a rental whose driver rides the pedal the whole way. You smell it first, a sharp burning odor, and then the pedal starts to feel soft. If that happens, shift to a lower gear, find the shoulder and let everything cool. Do not push your luck to the bottom.
If the brakes do not come back firm, the car should not be driven. Our car towing service takes it to the shop of your choice so a mechanic can look before anyone gets behind the wheel again. A short wait on the shoulder beats finding out the hard way at the first stoplight in Kahului.
